Ingredients

  • 14 oz firm tofu pressed overnight for maximum firmness
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon chili paste adjust based on spice preference
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil optional, adds nutty aroma

Equipment

  • Baking sheet
  • Parchment paper
  • Mixing bowl
  • Spatula or tongs

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 200°C (390°F) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Press the tofu for at least 20 minutes to remove excess water, then cut it into 1-inch cubes.
  3. In a mixing bowl, whisk together soy sauce, chili paste, minced garlic, and sesame oil until well combined and fragrant.
  4. Add the tofu cubes to the marinade and toss gently to coat all sides evenly. Let it sit for at least 15 minutes to absorb the flavors.
  5. Spread the marinated tofu cubes in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet, ensuring they are not touching to get crispy edges.
  6. Place the baking sheet in the oven and roast for 25-30 minutes, turning the tofu halfway through, until they are golden brown and crispy around the edges.
  7. Check that the tofu is firm and crackling, with a deep amber color. Remove from the oven and let rest for 5 minutes to settle the flavors.
  8. Garnish with chopped scallions or a squeeze of lime if desired, then serve hot over rice or salads for a spicy, smoky bite.
